How to shop Vintage:

1. Start with the lower priced shops, if you find great pieces for $20 you will be ecstatic and have no regrets if you don’t ever wear your purchase. Lower prices shops would be places that carry clothing from the 20’s- the 80’s.

Rule#1 Keep in mind the difference between “used” as “vintage”, used is slightly worn and at most 10 years old, vintage has character and unique details and is from an era past.

2. Look for current silhouettes like a jumpsuit from the 70’s or a high-waisted skirt from the 50’s. Find pieces that are in good condition and have great character. Prints can be fun, used Levis, skirts, silk dresses even vintage dressing gowns can be turned into great layering pieces.

3. Jewelry is one of the best things you can find vintage. Costume jewelry has great colors and bold chunky styles. You can sometimes find cool brooches too that can be used for not only coats or blouses but for a necklace as a centerpiece.

4. Definitely shop the high end vintage shops. Two examples of my favorites are DECADES in Los Angeles and Resurrection in NYC. These stores have vintage designer pieces. So you might find a great pair of YSL shades, a Pucci beach cover-up or an amazing Chloe dress!

Rule#2 You have to be a scout but the prize is worth the hunt!
