Metals maintain their original integrity when they are kept away from moisture. In order to preserve the metals and keep the jewelry bright and shiny, avoid wearing jewelry in the shower and remove the pieces prior to any extensive exercise.
When you are done wearing jewelry, put it away to prevent dust and moisture from collecting on the pieces. You should keep your accessories in a jewelry box or a closed drawer to protect pieces from sunlight and moisture. It is best to keep jewelry in small, individual boxes so that the metals remain separate from other metals.
Silver jewelry may be kept in small plastic bags to prevent the piece from tarnishing. You may salvage tarnished silver by buffing out blemishes with Sunshine brand polishing clothes. Note: Allow the clasp of the chain to dangle outside of the bag to avoid tangling.
Colored gemstones tend to fade in color over time. For this reason, avoid overexposure to heat or direct sunlight when wearing these stones. Keep them shiny by using a small amount of Windex and a toothbrush to polish off the dirt and oil left by your skin. Toothpaste may be used to treat certain stones – but be sure to remove all of this polish so that no white film remains.
After extended use, the ear backs (also known as “ear nuts”) to earrings may loosen. To tighten the backs, simply squeeze the back surface of the earring and the ear back together, keeping in mind it is the rigidity of the backsides – not the opening of the ear nut – that holds the nut on its post. This creates the tension necessary to hold the piece together.
